Lair of Dreams (Diviners #2) by Libba Bray
Myth: 4 /5
In this second book in Libba Bray’s Diviners series, a mysterious sleeping sickness is infecting New York City. The outbreak starts in Chinatown where we meet Ling Chan, another dreamwalker. Ling and Henry DuBois, team up to explore their dreamwalking powers.
Evie, has outed herself publicly as a Diviner and is now reaping the media rewards as America’s Sweetheart Seer. Yes, it is as intolerable as it sounds, but her antics do throw her into a deeper relationship with the charming pickpocket Sam Lloyd. Evie and Sam’s story throughout this book, while explaining Sam’s self-reliance, and isolation, also give a lot of depth to Evie’s character.
As residents of New York City start fearing their dreams, tensions rise, the city looks for someone to blame. Uncle Will is off investigating sightings of a man in a stovepipe hat, so the Diviners seem to be our only hope to dive into the dreamworld and safe the city from destroying itself.
Magic 4 /5
Our Diviner’s talents continue to ramp up in this sequel. They seem to be getting stronger, and some are learning that they are stronger together.
The most interesting part of this story focuses in on Ling & Henry as they explore dreamworld. As Henry chases his lost love and Ling searches to find her place in the world, they find themselves in a magical epicenter of dreams. And it may be filled with more nightmares than good dreams.
Overall 4/ 5
The sequel certainly kicked it up a notch! We continue to see Will chasing after, what we can only assume will be the ‘big bad’ while the Diviners learn from each other while saving the city from nightmares. There was more sizzle in this book in Theta’s past catching up to her, Evie’s beau trouble and the Harlem Healer getting his powers back. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
