Kyler has given up on her magic and found a path in which she truly excels, being a historian and scribe. She is more than a little surprised when she is called out of her studies to apprentice to a powerful and exiled sorcerer.
The story goes that Kyler is tempting enough to distract the sorcerer Leith from his goal, to overthrow the Academy. Thankfully, this is not all there is to the story. In the world of Salyndria we are painted a brief history of magical power in moderation versus magical power as complete ruler. As history has been written by the victors, there may be more to the story than meets the eye. This leaves Kyler a bit confused about her loyalties. Does she give in to the charms of the first man she deems worthy? Or does she fight against him and stand by the Academy’s rules?
While Rules of Enchantment wraps up nicely, the motivations of the main characters throughout the story are a bit lax. Kyler stands up for herself and makes her own decisions but her convictions are lacking.

Kyler was unsuccessful in her initial attempts to learn magic, even though she was determined to have magic at a very early age. Leith is the first teacher that takes the time to see the power she has and really understand how to help her unlock it. He isn’t patient but he is persistent in helping her unlock the power she’s been hiding.
Overall: 3/5
Though overall a quick read, there was a strong world and history built to support the story. With a dash of prophecy and a bit of fate, it made for an enjoyable read.
