Goodreads Synopsis

Review:

Myth: 5/5

Wings of Ebony pulls together a lot of my favorite YA fantasy elements but shapes them in a raw, fast paced, whirlwind. Rue is driven by family love and loyalty. Not just blood family, but found family. While wanting to be with them in the midst of tragedy, she’s dragged away to a magical land for her own protection. She quickly rejects that approach and puts her smart-mouthed, self-reliant driven self on a mission to find a way back. Part urban fantasy in Houston and part magical island of Ghizon, Rue must understand herself in both worlds to save the people she loves in either.

Magic: 4/5

The storytelling is so interesting in the way that the magic was interwoven. Early in the story we get a magical overview, where the magic comes from, how Ghizon’s become bound, etc. While this is normal for a YA fantasy book, Elle doesn’t stop here, she pushes us and her characters to follow the magic further, understand its roots.

I was also pretty into the interweaving of magic and technology. I’m always a sucker for stories that almost treat them as the same thing.

Overall: 5/5

Rue was my favorite kind of heroine. She was relentless in finding her way and unapologetic in righting wrongs. Underpinned with raw discussion on racism, this story and these characters will stick with me.
