Review:

Myth: 3.5/5

I really liked the style of this book. Tea is telling her story in the present and most of this book is her sharing what happened to her in the past, similar to the way the story is told in The Kingkiller Chronicles. I also loved the asha world. It was so unique, powerful elemental witches are trained in magic, fighting, singing, dancing and history. They’re then sought after for social events as entertainers very Geisha-esque.

I think that some parts of Tea’s character didn’t come across well in the audiobook format. I kept reminding myself that she was only 15 in the story, but she seemed to be in tears every chapter, and with audiobook narration, it became very whiney. I certainly acknowledge that she was dealing with a lot and had plenty of reasons to break down into tears regularly, it just became a little tiresome.

Magic: 4/5

The dark asha are very rare, which is always cool, but even more so because Tea is further looking to break with their tradition. We only got snippets of it in this book, but there is definitely a lot to unpack on their power to control the daeva.

I was also into the heart glass mythology, everyone wears on around their neck and for those that can pay attention, it’s a window into the wearers emotions.

Overall: 3.5/5

I think a little bit of a slow start to the series, lots of detail on the training, coming of age progress as Tea learns her magic. From the snippets of present day Tea though, there’s a lot more I want to know and definitely want to see what she gets up to next.
