We meet the main character, I’ll use the name Angel, as she first meets the horsemen. She’s waking up with no knowledge of her life prior to this moment. This throws us immediately into the intrigue of “who is she?” “where is she?” and then “who are these people with her?” It’s a great way to introduce the world of the horsemen.
There is plenty of world building in this book. I would say that is actually the main focus. Not only traditional world building of who the horsemen are, why they exist and how they fit into the future world in which we find ourselves, but also a world building of the horsemen dynamics and the unique family that they’ve created.
The current family dynamics are those of survival. I think our heroine, being the new kid, will continue to push for more than just survival, maybe even enjoyment and love.

I really enjoyed being along for the ride to peel back the layers to Angel’s magic. I enjoyed it the most when the new magical discoveries overlapped with some of her nightmares/memories from her unknown past.
The fluidity of race, gender and sexuality was really well done. It was a unique solution to the known ways that the magics worked together (or in this case didn’t).
Overall: 4/5
I was a little surprised with how much I enjoyed the book, given that it was so heavy on the character and world building without as much immediate problem solving. In this case though, it really worked. Understanding the characters, the horseman dynamics, was the problem solving.
