Review:

Myth: 3/5

Having fulfilled his end of the bargain, Meghan now has to uphold hers and go to the Winter Court. I had a little bit of a hard time with the Meghan/Ash story in the first book, as even though the flame was inevitable, there didn’t seem to be a lot of driving forces in the story. The court scenes in this book were a little infuriating because Ash said in pretty clear terms that emotion was a weakness in the Winter Court, but Meghan proceeded to show her emotion at every turn to her enemies. That left Ash having to double down on proving that the summer princess meant nothing to him.

We’re thrown a line from the court mess when the Iron Fey make their reappearance, stealing the scepter that passes between the courts with the changing of the seasons. Thankfully this takes us out of Winter and on a quest through the nevernever (and some cool in-between places) to track down the scepter to prevent war between the Winter and Summer courts.

The concept of the Iron Fey always having a ruler, if one dies, another emerges is intriguing. It's unclear yet how that successor is chosen, but seems questionable that the mysterious claimant of the throne has the same power as the last monarch. It looks like this will be a critical piece in how the nevernever moves forward.

Magic: 3/5

Meghan starts this book again, seemingly powerless. We slowly learn what happened to the heavy hitting powers she was starting to show at the end of book one. But what I enjoyed about this part of the story was that Meghan’s magic seems to come from multiple sources. As she learns this I think it will lead to her finding her place in the courts.

Overall: 3/5

Not my favorite love triangle, but I do want to find out how the nevernever will survive the age of technology.
