Review:

Myth: 4/5

The fourth installment in the Innkeeper Chronicles follows Dina’s sister Maud as she tries to re-enter vampire society with Arland. He has proposed, she has said “maybe,” and she and Helen have gone with him back to House Krahr’s homeworld.

Although we have left Dina and Gertrude Hunt back on Earth, Maud’s story still very much has the heart of an innkeeper’s daughter. Her struggles are different, she has a daughter, she has fought to survive after selfishness and betrayal from one who was supposed to love and protect, but she was raised in an Inn just like Dina. Her knowledge of alien travelers and customs is an asset, her time spent homeschooling and weapons training has put her in league with vampire warriors. She is a scholar, mother and badass and we love her.

Maud and Arland are a delight. Their chemistry is seamless as they flow from sparring partners to vampire court-like society to working out how to make a life together in any environment.

Magic: 4/5

Though we don’t get any magic of an innkeeper and her inn in this story, we do still see the magic of the innkeepers. Sometimes just in the details of making a foreign guest comfortable in a new environment and sometimes in small feats that Maud shouldn’t be able to perform and doesn’t quite understand.

Overall: 4/5

Maud’s story leaves us happy for Maud but still fully unresolved on the overarching Demille family saga. We get the larger story cliffhanger at the very end of this book that certainly leaves us waiting for the next installment.
