Realm of Beasts starts us on an epic journey introducing Tor Lir and Citrine. Tori Lir is a bit of a mystery in the first book, though he is along for the ride on Citrine’s journey into the dark woods. He is immortal to Citrine’s enchantress and therefore provides a bit of a tempered, immortal perspective to the situations they find themselves in, but I’m definitely more drawn to Citrine’s character. She is powerful, and throughout the first half of the book, just as mysterious (maybe more so) than Tor Lir.
As this is just starting an epic story, there is a bit of worldbuilding to set before getting into the story, but I thought this was done really well in the Realm of Beasts, it treated the world building like a mystery story, giving you just enough information to get you intrigued, then jumping to another part of the story. This worked so well to give me the information I needed for the story but also to keep me hooked.

This series is about the Nameless One and as such, we really don’t learn that much about him in the first book. He is an immortal sort of on an “off to seek my destiny” quest. He doesn’t quite know what it is, but he’s willing to try and find out. While a powerful immortal, he doesn’t really seem to know what his power is, or how to use it. Citrine is more straightforward, she’s the most powerful enchantress of her generation and as such has a connection with beasts and nature.

I was quickly swept up in the beauty of Paradise and Citrine’s desire to protect it. I fell deeper into the mystery of the realms and am excited to see what Tor Lir and Citrine are off to explore next.
