Review:

Myth: 5/5

I thought book two was a strong build but it had nothing on A Reaper at the Gates. I believe that in Save the Cat storytelling terms, this entire book is the series’ dark night of the soul. Each character that we’ve come to love has to confront who they are and how they came to be that way. Some do better than others with their findings.

Laia and the Blood Shrike have each come into their own, though they each continue to struggle in their own ways on how best to wield the power and influence that they have. Not so surprisingly, the Blood Shrike really steals the show in this book. Her story has been complex, and if we thought the last book broke her, we now see why she needed to be prepared.

Magic: 4.5/5

Throughout everything the Nightbringer lurks. He appears in unexpected places, still the puppet master (even more so than the Augurs) moving the pieces on the board until they deliver his outcome.

Overall: 4.5/5

A Reaper at the Gates was my favorite book so far. Plenty of action, powerful and brutal battle scenes and sacrifices all around. I can’t wait to see how the story concludes.
