Review:

Myth: 4/5

It was always about all three of them, The Blood Shrike, The Soul Catcher and Laia of Serra, they all had parts to play in trying to create a better world than the one that was left for them. Though I didn’t think things could get much worse for everyone after the last book, Tahir finds ways to further wreck us as readers as she leads us through to an epic conclusion.

I love the friendship that the Blood Shrike and Laia formed. Through all that they had lost in these wars, for having found themselves ready to kill each other more than once, a friendship was built, and it shone through many parts of this story. Shared understanding through loss was a strong theme throughout all characters and all sides of this story. What separated the ‘heroes’ from the ‘villains’ was how they dealt with it.

Magic: 4/5

The story magic and history of Mauth and the Nightbringer leaned even more into a creation and rebellion story. I liked that even when it seemed like we were drawing into the close of the backstory, more needed to be uncovered to really see where the NIghtbringer was going. Though each of the main characters had their own critical parts to play, I loved that unraveling the magic and the history of the Nightbringer was Laia’s domain.

Overall: 4/5

A Sky Beyond the Storm had sweeping scope, brutal battles and heroines who never gave in or gave up. The epic conclusion to the Ember in the Ashes series packs a punch of both heartbreak and hope.
