Review:

Myth: 3/5

The second book focused on Grey dealing with his newly learned history and all the ramifications that has for Emberfall and his relationship with Rhen. Newly introduced in this story is Lia Mara, first daughter of Karis Luran. She is first daughter, but not heir, and while she definitely brings a good balance to Grey by not trying to solve everything with the sword, she is plagued with a lot of self doubt. While reasonable given how she was raised and the YA themes of the book, it left us with two indecisive characters and only a few moments of take charge action. I really missed Harper’s character.

Magic: 3.5/5

I did enjoy that Grey got the magic, after a few hundred years with Rhen, that seems fair. I think I liked the scraver story most. This seems to have delightful potential for the third book and it starts to show that there is more magic in the world than Emberfall was willing to think about.

Overall: 3/5

I think overall I was most disappointed to be taken away from Harper’s story. And while the heart of this story had to do with making the best of bad situations, seeing Rhen and Grey’s struggle from afar sort of undermined Harper’s story to me.
