Review:

Myth: 3/5

This is a story with a decent sized ensemble of characters both being introduced and telling the story. I’ll admit that at the beginning I had a little trouble identifying which characters were important and who was who within the magical families.

A magical, cursed version of the hunger games, the children of seven families have a generational battle to the death. Raised in an environment when this battle is all your family knows creates some pretty interesting characters. The family that always loses (the drunks), the family that always wins (the monsters), the one who will save everyone, the one who wants nothing to do with this, the one who wants to uphold their family’s honor. I enjoyed diving into what each character would do for their particular motivations. It was definitely an interesting concept.

Magic: 3/5

Take the hunger games, but add a magical curse instead of a structured ‘game show.’ The families can’t get out, someone must participate. A magic more powerful than any other on the Earth is at stake.

Overall: 3/5

Cool concept, interesting plays with what makes one a hero or a villain, but overall had a hard time getting sucked in to any specific character’s story. I think for me there were just too many and it wasn’t until almost 60% of the way through that I really grasped which ones were important to follow.
