An Interview with Jillian Witt

An Interview with Jillian Witt

Happy Release Day to Myth and Magic’s own Jillian Witt! Her Debut new adult fantasy—Compass Points— hits the shelves today, and we’re excited to get a little Q&A time with the author.

1. Let's do Instagram's favorite -- tell us about your book Compass Points (Compass Points #1) in tropes!

  • soft enemies to lovers

  • fake dating

  • fae

  • elemental magic

  • shapeshifting sidekick

2. Tell us about the world of Compass Points

I grew up in Michigan. For those of you not familiar with it, it’s fairly flat. What we call mountains, other parts of the country would call small hills. I lived in San Francisco for six years, and my partner was obsessed with hiking. We went to more National Parks out west than I ever imagined. The world of the Compass Points was largely inspired by this terrain. Some of the landmarks, like Rose’s home, are near replicas of National Parks—I can’t wait to see if readers recognize them.

3. Do you have a favorite scene in Compass Points?

I have many! So many were so fun to write. I wasn’t sure as an author that I’d cackle with myself over my own writing, the way I do when I read some of my favorite books—but it happened. Rose and Luc’s fight is a favorite of mine, as is a particular moment in an inn, but I won’t go into more details on that because—spoilers.

4. If you had elemental magic — what element would you want?

It would be way too hard to pick. I found that as I fell in love with a particular element, especially while writing book two, I’d find just as many surprising and delightful nuances that could pertain to another element. I will admit that in my heart, I’d still love to be fireheart and think that flame would be a pretty cool element to wield.

5. What’s next?

Rose and Luc cover a lot of ground in Compass Points but have so much more to do! I am hard at work on Compass Points #2, the title to be revealed soon, and I expect it to be released in June 2024.
