Goodreads synopsis

Myth: 2/5

This is the first book that I’ve read from the Magical Romantic Comedies series, the reviews and author notes said that most of these could be read independently of each other. It was suggested that this book was read before reading R.J.’s new release A Chip on Her Shoulder.

The world building was light, but that seemed okay. We were in a world that looked a lot like ours but magic was front and center, public services were equipped to handle various magical species and some species were more well known than others.

This story itself was a bit jaunty, but that seemed to match our heroine. Kanika is a mercenary, you can hire her for, well, whatever. She’s also a sphinx, which have a lot of mythos of their own, however, it’s clear that in this book at least Kanika isn’t going to learn a lot about her nature. She’s content to sort of feel it out as she goes.

What was originally a kidnapping job of a sexy firefighter (that the devil coerced her into) quickly went to potential Stockholm syndrome, then to a bit of a fake fiance situation to keep the family off your back. As I said, a little jaunty, but fun.

Magic: 2/5

I will say that the star of the show was the devil. He was the most captivating character and most used to keep the story moving forward. At times he pushed the story even more than Kanika.

He was also the deus ex machina as he and his angel brethren had all the answers but were bound by certain rules. It added to the jaunty tone that the magic system didn’t take itself too seriously, and neither did the main players (the representatives of good and evil).

Overall: 2/5

It was fun, amusing and a little all over the place. The story still worked with the zigzags, some were more abrupt than others. Most sort of fit into the world in which you’re doing deals with the devil and trying to make modifications as you go.
