Myth: 1/5

I’m all for a good prophecy intentionally or unintentionally guiding the character’s actions, but it seemed a little overused in this story. The prophecy was driving everyone’s actions, the main character wasn’t allowed to know the prophecy, but was sort of doing what everyone else (who knew the prophecy) told her to do anyway.

I didn’t really feel like Sky had any agency. She seemed to make very few decisions for herself. It was either, she had no other option or the magic brought her. The magic brought her to her new location, which was supposed to be in Northern Michigan, as a Michigander I was very excited for the scene setting, however, the most that we got was that it was a street with at least two houses on it and woods for the characters to get lost in. There was really no time spent on where the characters were, just a pretty abrupt jump into plot.

I think this probably is tied to the overdone prophecy side of things, but the romance didn’t hit for me either. I can appreciate a fated mates type deal and characters being drawn to each other for no reason, but then usually you get a few scenes where they learn a little about each other before being totally smitten. It just seemed like a few scenes were missing or maybe just some additional banter of Sky and Rune learning something about each other that didn’t have to do with the dragon or the mystic.

Magic: 2/5

I was a little confused about the magic. It seemed like Sky had learned a few things from her Aunt growing up, but it was back and forth as far as whether she believed in what she learned. It also didn’t really seem like she did any training herself, even when the characters were going to train. Conceptually, I like the idea of the shifter/mystic power duo, it just seemed like if Sky didn’t grow up training, there needed to be more “magical basics” in this story to give credibility to her ability to wield power.

Overall: 2/5

The story felt a little rushed. A few cool ideas, but overall I wanted to know more about where they are, how they got there. I also didn’t really connect with any of the characters so I found myself not really invested in their success.
