House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1) by Sarah J Maas

House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City #1) by Sarah J Maas

Myth: 5/5

The first book in Sarah J Maas’s new series. She brings us a completely new setting, Crescent City, a buzzing, futuristic metropolis with plenty of tech and magic. As this is book one, we see a lot of world building, just enough to help you understand the current story, but also dropping plenty of hits on what cracks will be pushed on in future books in the series and of course this is what leaves us wanting more at the end.

Bryce is a very compelling read. She’s smart, sexy and guarded. Though I will say that’s not immediately apparent. The Bryce you meet on page 1 is not the same Bryce you meet 2 years later.

Magic: 4/5

I have to admit that one of my favorite parts of this book is the ruling hierarchy of angels. While keeping all of the traditional magical characters; werewolves, vamprys, fae, wraiths, witches, demons, she also adds a complex government led by archangels, and enforced by a fallen host. It was fresh to have this new take within fantasy races.

We learn as we go on the magic levels of different characters in this world. It was convenient that within the world, there was magic testing incorporated into childhood. It was also another wonderful throwback to having an oracle’s prophecies included a child's rights of passage.

Overall:  5/5

She did it again, Sarah J Maas proves that her imagination knows no bounds and that she can write compelling characters in any setting. My biggest problem now is how long I’ll have to wait for the next book.
