Review:

Myth: 4.5/5

Oh, Feyre. In book one of the trilogy, we are introduced to the weight that Feyre carries. At nineteen, she is the soul provider for her father and sisters. As a young woman in a poor village, she has taught herself to hunt, to cook and sell parts of her kill and to stretch food for four as long as possible. The years having to provide for her family with little help from those around her have left her jaded.

When a treaty demands that for her actions she must live out her days in the faerie lands of Prythian, she does it to protect her family from any repercussions. Enter Tamlin and Lucien of the Spring Court. Feyre is whisked away to live in a High Lord’s estate with more food and freedom than she could have ever wanted. Feyre admittedly has a hard time adjusting given her disdain for the Fae who had gone to war to continue enslaving humans hundreds of years ago.

Think of a little pride and stubbornness that needs to be overcome on each side, but eventually, through her time there, Feyre sees that not all is right in the faerie lands. A blight is on the lands, impacting their magic.

This is one of those books where you’re going with the story, minding your own business and then like 70% through the book, the story takes a turn you may or may not have expected, but it definitely kicks the enjoyment up a notch.

Magic: 4.5/5

While there is enough faerie magic and glamour to impress, it quickly becomes known that the magic Feyre sees is but a taste of what they were once capable. What lengths will Feyre go to in order to help the fae she once hated get their magic back?

Overall: 4.5/5

This was not what I expected, but in the best way possible. We sort of went from “classic fairy tale retelling” to a story with a bit more meat to it within the span of a few pages. All I can do is say thank you Sarah J Maas and head on over to A Court of Mist and Fury.
