Godhunter (Godhunter Series Book #1) by Amy Sumida

Godhunter (Godhunter Series Book #1) by Amy Sumida

Myth: 4/5

In this story, “Gods” are Atlanteans who have decided to take over by taking advantage of the fact that their civilizations was so far ahead of everyone else that they could be worshipped by mere mortals. Interesting concept and allowed for some of your favorite Gods of all pantheons to make their way into the story.

Vervain is a witch, with no exceptional strength or prowess, but finds herself as the only human to have successfully killed an Atlantean. She takes this success and keeps going, eventually being known to them as the Godhunter.

She really didn’t know as much as she thought she did when she started killing Gods. She quickly finds herself choosing sides in a battle between Gods that use humans and some that think they should be protected. Vervain is a fun character but constantly finds herself in over her head.

Magic: 2.5/5

The magic in this book was pretty creepy. There was the standard uses of Atlantean’s advanced technology that seem like magic, but there are also some Gods that have powers of persuasion, dreamwalking and more. Without giving too much away, the magic portion of this book really leaves Vervain open for some uncomfortable situations from which the lighthearted story never really recovers.

Overall: 3/5

Interesting concept, not super well executed. I think there could have been something here if the “bad guy” had been a little more “grey area,” but he too quickly crossed too many lines that he became a character you didn’t want to read anymore.
