Review:

The first book in the Night Huntress series introduces us to Cat Crawford, vampire hunter.

Myth: 3/5

Cat isn’t your ‘chosen one’ kind of vampire slayer. Her mom told her when she was a teenager that she was half vampire. And that her father raped her mother. Her mother takes out her anger at vampires on Cat, bringing her up to believe that all vampires are evil. Cat does her part by killing as many as she can. Think of it as her penance.

Until she meets Bones, the master vampire and bounty hunter. Bones takes an opportunity to make a deal with Cat. He’ll train her to better hunt vampires if she goes after the ones that he chooses.

Magic: 3/5

Vampire and half vampire lore includes a few resets on traditional expectations. Cat has some super-human strength and speed from her father. This makes her a heroine that can take care of herself.

Overall: 3/5

An unlikely partnership that quickly pushes our heroine to confront assumptions and prejudices about herself and vampires. Fast paced, sexy, and even though Cat is no Buffy, you can’t help but call Spike to mind when reading descriptions of Bones.
