Ninth House (Alex Stern #1) by Leigh Bardugo

Ninth House (Alex Stern #1) by Leigh Bardugo

Leigh Bardugo brings us a new series set in modern day New Haven. A dark peek into Yale’s secret societies and the magical powers they wield.

Myth: 4/5

Alex Stern is a tough character to crack. What is she up to? We can buy the story that she didn’t have a lot of options, but we also know that can’t be the whole story.

The eight “tombs” and the societies that they power are captivating. I just want to learn everything about them, but of course the details and specialities of each powerhouse of magic are only released over time. The ninth house, the mall cops of magic, is where Alex is needed. Brought to Yale because of her special gifts with the supernatural, and groomed to monitor the houses of magic during her tenure at school. This is a great twist on the elite history of the Skull & Bones society.

Magic: 3.5/5

We know they’re all messing with magic. It’s hard to tell how much the societies know or think they know. We learn about the uncanny as Alex does, and as we’ve see, she has plenty of reason to want to figure this stuff out.

Overall: 3.5/5

A mysterious and enticing beginning to the story. Excellent world building with a lot of action towards the end to leave us holding our breath for the next book.
