Review:

Myth: 3.5/5

I have previously read the Six of Crows books and wanted to learn more about the Grisha so I already loved the world. The political climate leading to a Grisha army led by the Darkling was perfectly woven into the first third of the story.

I wasn’t overly excited about the love story. Alina is a great character, but I’m not into the “I didn’t see her until she was gone” kind of guy.

The Darkling is a fascinatingly complex character, I think he steals the show as far as a male lead, which is probably wrong, but was fine with me.

Magic: 4/5

I was a little surprised as this is the introductory book to Ravka and the Grisha world that more time wasn’t spent on the types of Grisha. Things were mentioned in passing that allowed you to build the picture, but most of the Grisha lore introduced was on the concept of the amplifier.

There were, of course, the traditional training montages as Alina is prepared for physical combat and using her powers.

Overall: 3.5/5

I’m interested in the world and Alina’s story, the type of love story just wasn’t for me. I’ll definitely keep reading the series though to see if Alina can save Ravka.
