Review:

Myth: 4/5

Nikolai continues to be my favorite, his banter with Zoya keeps me on edge throughout the book. Zoya started as such a simplistic character, but has charmed her way into our hearts. She is fierce, does what needs to be done and as Nikolai quipped, “beneath her icy exterior is an even icier interior.” Even though this story also included perspective from Nina on a secret mission in Fjerda, I think Zoya’s story was more commanding.

Nina was introduced in the Six of Crows Duology, a powerful Grisha, the only one known to have survived jurda parem. While Nina’s story in this book is explained, it is definitely a more impactful story if you’re familiar with her other adventures.

Magic: 4/5

As King, Nikolai was left with many scars from his family, from the civil war, from the Darkling’s magic. He thought that over the three years since the Darkling’s demise that he’d conquered them, but little by little, his monster shows himself again.

As has been a constant theme in the Grishaverse, the lives of saints aren’t always what they seem and some even get to share their stories. As with Saint Ilya, the saint’s lore may obscure the truth of Grisha magic.

Overall: 4/5

Nikolai and Zoya are the perfect romance/tragedy I wanted from the Shadow and Bones trilogy. We’ll have to see where Nina’s story takes her as the two separate paths to the story didn’t intertwine much in this first book.
