Review

Myth: 5/5

This is one of those great reviews where I’m at a loss for words. I loved everything about Crooked Kingdom. It gave me another classic heist scheme, but this time it was personal. If the heist at the ice court was for money and a bit of ego, Crooked Kingdom gets to throw in that beautiful revenge story. And no one does revenge better than the gang of thugs we’ve come to know and love.

Magic: 5/5

This is still in the Grishaverse, and still plenty of Grisha shenanigans, especially with some characters you may find more enjoyable after reading the Shadow and Bones series. I think the real magic in this story is the heist though. It’s kind of like the definition of a magic trick in the movie The Prestige where the line is that “making something disappear isn’t enough; you have to bring it back. That's why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call "The Prestige".” I feel like that encapsulates the vibe of this book. In the gang’s case I would paraphrase to; it’s not enough to right the wrong, you have to burn it to the ground. That is pure magic.

Overall: 5/5

If you can’t tell, I loved it. A classic revenge heist with so many dead ends and replans throughout the process. The story keeps you on your toes and the characters can’t help but draw you in.
