Review:

Myth: 4/5

First and foremost Prince Nikolai stole the show in the second installment of the Shadow and Bone trilogy. He was the character I’ve been waiting for, less broody than Mal, more sure of himself and his goals than Alina. He was exactly who she needed to meet to help get her to the next phase of her journey.

Alina covered a lot of ground in the second book. Runaway, leader of armies, saint. She has yet to figure out what she’s fighting for, but at least she knows she’s fighting and not running, and that is a start.

Magic: 4/5

The Darklings’ power grows and so does Alina’s. I am taken with how these characters have intertwined themselves.

I also love the Lives of Saints lore in which they are steeping themselves. Nothing creates complete world building like histories of saints, religions, and childhood legend.

Overall: 4/5

I continue to be unimpressed by Alina and Mal, but have hopes that they can mature in their understanding of who they are becoming in the final book. I also continue to be drawn to the surrounding characters of power, as Nikolai and the Darkling influence Alina’s character and decisions.
