Review:

Myth: 3/5

I think I would have liked this book a bit more if it didn’t allude to being a ‘reverse telling’ of the Count of Monte Cristo. Sure, Amaya is part of a revenge plot and comes back to the city she grew up in disguised as a mysterious and wealthy countess, but the similarity ends there.

I still liked the story. I didn’t love Amaya’s character. She is young, and hurting, but she doesn’t even really seem to know her motivations. That could be the point, she didn’t know her own mind and that allowed her to become someone else’s weapon, but it doesn’t make for a super compelling heroine.

I’m intrigued by the politics of Moray and the surrounding kingdoms and think that it shows ambitions of a larger scale story, hence the second book.

Magic: NA

While the story takes place in a mythical land there really is no magic. The closest we come is alchemy and we’ll have to wait for the next book to see if that develops.

Overall: 3/5

This seems like a story that needed a big build, like we’re just getting started on the big story when this book concluded. I liked it, I will definitely read Ravage the Dark.
