Myth 3/5

The third novel in this series follows the romantic and spy endeavors of Kaldar, Cerise’s cousin. Unfortunately I was too influenced by William’s perspective of Kaldar in the second book, so I wasn’t too keen on following his own adventure.

The best part of this book is the return of Jack and George! Although they don’t have quite as many POV chapters as the first book, they are still some of my favorite characters to read. I also love that we get to see how they’ve grown up and their interactions with Gaston - one of the best parts of this series is that even though they are standalone novels, we get to see earlier characters come into play and interact throughout the story.

Magic 3/5

We were bound to have some characters without a white flash, but after all the power-punching of the first 2 books this one felt a bit lackluster. I like the idea of 2 conmen who have to rely on their wits and abilities getting together, but it also introduced a lot of new “Hand” artifacts that appeared nowhere else in the first two books. It felt a bit like a plot inconsistency- obviously the Weird would have developed their technology different than the Broken because they were able to depend on magic, but this is the first time in 3 books that we are seeing the technology that is SO different. The new tech didn’t progress the story at all so I started skimming through it every time the new magical spy equipment was described, it became tedious.
