Myth: 3/5
This was a really interesting approach to me. It seemed almost more like historical fiction for the first 60% of the book. Yes, there were some discussions of magic and spell masters but overall they didn’t impact the story. A little over half way is when the story jumped from a history of the Romanov’s to a magical adventure. I definitely enjoyed the second part more, though I understood why the first part was necessary to the overall story.
Magic: 2.5/5
I wasn’t very excited by the magical aspect of this book. Though in most cases, circumstances prevented it, I didn’t really get a good sense of how one learned magic. The magic here was mostly instances of ‘it will come when you need it most,” which doesn’t really make for a very interesting magic system.
Overall: 3/5
An interesting, magical take on the Romanov story. Nastya made for a compelling heroine as she tried to learn the magic of spellwork while also trying to figure out the very human emotion of forgiving your enemies.
