Review:

Myth: 5/5

Zetian is a character powered by the rage of the society in which she lives and her upbringing. She uses her anger to attack her situation in the only way she can think of, by taking down one of its star fighter pilots. The beginning of this book was amazing to me as it took a common trope, female protagonist plans to kill the man in power, but then falls in love with him, but just goes a completely new way with it, “Welcome to your nightmare!” indeed.

From there we’re on a wild ride navigating the current military and political regimes and breaking through with her own agenda.

Magic: 4/5

The magic infused war machines and gender based seats within them make for the perfect setting in Zetian’s story. She’s powerful and poised to wield magic to right the wrongs that have been inflicted in this gendered system. It’s a delightful mix of magic, science fiction and bringing down the patriarchy.

Overall: 4.5/5

A stunningly unique YA debut. I can’t wait to see what Xiran Jay Zhao comes up with next.
