Review:

Myth: 3.5/5

A world with multiple gods, each in control of their various people and realms, with the city of Chime right in the center of it all. It’s a unique crossroads to explore as the gods, that are meant to care for their people, have disastrous whims and require high tithes.

The godless establish themselves to truly care for mortals, especially mortals forsaken by their gods.

The history of Chime, interwoven with Kayl and Quen’s adventure unraveled a lot of mysteries and dark pasts. Thanks to some of the magical powers there is also a good deal of divination and destiny.

Told through alternating POVs between Kayl and Quen, I found the sometimes overlap of their perspectives to be a little lengthy, so that story itself was slow in a few places as one character learned or evaluated something the other had already been through. But the character’s stories were easy to root for as they tried to make the best of their various situations, I wasn’t able to really emotionally connect with either character, but I definitely wanted to know what happened next to them.

Magic: 3/5

Each god is in control of a people, it was quite fun to see the various magical characteristics of the people of different realms, you had some with vampiric traits, siren traits, divination, time control, elemental powers, and more.

Overall: 3/5

A unique fantasy world with lots of room to build. Though a little repetitive in some of the storytelling, the unfolding of Chime’s history leaves you wanting to know what happens next. As the first in a series, the end of the book unpacks a lot about the realms and characters you’ve come to know and sets us up for another installment to Kayl’s story.
