I loved Vel and Cae! They were both rich characters, thrown together and left to let feelings grow. This is a “marriage first, feelings later” story, and I was obsessed from the beginning. Vel’s story had a brutal start, but as the CW notes, it’s ultimately one of healing, and that was clear throughout.
The story held a complexly woven tapestry of political characters and motivations. While at times it felt like information overload, I loved how the information was given in ways that let Vel show off his strengths.
Magic: 4/5
There is magic in this world, but it’s not a heavy part of the story. It does become clear why, and I hope to see a little more in additional books in the series.
Overall: 5/5
Captivating characters, and enthralling political intrigue, I enjoyed every moment of Vel and Cae’s story.
