Review:

Myth: 3.5/5

We find ourselves transported to Regency era London, where high society balls are attended by proper young ladies trying to find husbands and...vampires?

The vampire Voss is the quintessential rogue vampire. He is a chaos agent within the vampire world, with no loyalties to any family or faction. In the human world, he is charming and handsome and takes anything and anyone he wants.

Angelica, with gypsy heritage giving her both the Sight and vampire hunting lore. Angelica, though young and inexperienced, has wisdom from the magical burdens she bears. She does not really get to be a powerhouse in her own right, but she does have agency when it counts in her interactions with Voss.

Magic: 4/5

I really enjoyed the addition of ‘vampire bane’ to the vampire mythos. Each vampire, upon creation, can be harmed by the first thing that they happen to see? This could be as nuanced as a herb from a painting or something as common as a coin. The vampire then has to spend the rest of their existence guarding their secret.

Overall: 3.5/5

I like the contrast of proper London society with the debauchery of a rogue vampire lifestyle. I would have liked more agency in Angelica, I expect we’ll see a bit more of that in her sister Maia’s book.
