Slightly longer than the first short story set in the kinsmen universe, we have more time to learn about Claire, a highly trained refugee that has to disguise herself as a commoner in order to escape off planet. She is a rare psycher, with the ability to travel the bionet. But her hidden talent becomes a major liability when her assigned job on her new planet is for a bionet protector service…

The “bionet” is basically a biological internet - completely unique to the Kinsmen universe. To work in the bionet, Claire must be hooked up matrix-style and perceives the bionet as a wild woods where she is forced to kill anything that looks like an intruder. The “magic” is more technological than magical, and everyone perceives the bionet differently. Most of the action in the novel takes place in the bionet, where Claire is a commander, a spy and an all-around powerhouse.
