Review:

Myth 3/5

In this book we see an adult Dorothy return to Oz. She’s been hit by hard times and is about to lose the farm, plus is considered crazy since no one back home believes her story of a magical world of Oz. But when she returns, Oz is not what she’s used to.  She’s stuck with a Tin-turned-assassin, Lion and Crow are missing, plus there’s a new wicked woman looking to take over the land. Can Dorothy get the gang back together again or has too much changed since she’s been gone?

Magic 2/5

I’ve never read the original The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and maybe if I had I would have found this storybook Oz more believable… I can totally understand Dorothy wanting to return to Oz and the kooky, colorful little houses and decaying yellow brick road that she once again finds.  But I did not understand the main big bad with the ability to “wear people’s heads like hats” and how there were enough people to kill that she could wear a different one every day. Seemed like Oz should be running out of people to kill… Plus I couldn’t get over the concept of wheelies - vicious once-human beings that now had wheels for hands and feet and whose spine had elongated for them to roll around much like a canine would if forced to do it’s master’s bidding.  I couldn’t quite picture it in my mind and I wasn’t sure how it fit in with the whole world building.

Overall 2.5/5

If you’re feeling nostalgic for some childhood tales and want a hefty dose of adult lust thrown in, then take a chance on this book. But the series did not have the staying power to hold my attention.
