Review:

Myth: 3.5/5

Picking up a few weeks after Trail of Lightening, Storm of Locusts continues Maggie’s story as she works to make good on the promises she made herself in the last book. She’s also killing time while Kai figures himself out after an admittedly traumatic event.

I missed Maggie and Kai’s partnership, their chemistry definitely pushed Trail of Lighting forward. New characters seemed to take his place as she chased him down, and they rounded out other parts of Maggie’s character, but it wasn’t the same.

Though the gods are still active in this book, it’s also not quite the same, the trickster was just too good of a character in book one, that the White Locust doesn’t really compare. I certainly still enjoyed the ride through the post-apocalyptic world, but this story somehow felt small in the epic world that was built.

Magic: 3/5

Get ready for some new tribal powers and new monsters for the monster slayer to hunt down. For the series arc, there was really only one magical progression made in this installment, and it’s great, but it’s definitely a teaser for further stories in the world, not really that impactful in this one specifically.

Overall: 3.5/5

Maggie is a treasure to follow, especially as she tries to turn over this new leaf. Some of the new characters, especially Ben, worked really well to compliment her character growth. While others, like the White Locust weren’t that exciting to me in a world filled with vengeful gods.
