Goodreads Synopsis

Review:

Myth: 3.5/5

Our Bloody Pearl is at its heart a sweet story of physical and emotional recovery through self acceptance and found family. Perle has a lot of assumptions about humans just as they learn that Dejean also has a lot of assumption about the unprovoked violence of sirens. They work to understand each other through a sign language of their own making.

This story was quite unique in that it was a pirate, ocean world, but definite steam punk elements. I haven’t seen that pairing before. I liked the plot points that this brought to the story, supporting Perle’s paralyzed tail, moving Perle between land and sea, but at times I found them a little too technical.

Magic: 3/5

The siren world was so misunderstood at the beginning of the story. It was heart warming to see Perle and Dejean find a way to communicate and discuss their various cultures and expectations/understandings. The siren song and violence was a big part of that.

Overall: 3.5/5

It’s easy to root for Perle and Dejean (and their pod) as they learn about each other, recover and learn how to survive and thrive, especially for Perle, outside of their culture’s expectations.
