Review:

Myth 5/5

This story follows the beloved king’s champion’s daughter, Aly, as she is forced to forge her own path in the world. When her parents refuse to put her spying talents to use, she is captured as a slave and offered a deal with the local god to use her skills to keep a noble family’s children alive throughout the summer. She is aided by an undercover rebellion and the crows.

This story is more complex than earlier novels set in the Tortall universe (fitting for a spy!), But the story is still a coming of age of a 16 year old girl. I love it. And I can’t forget her love interest, Nawat, a crow turned man with an uniquely interesting take on everything. He is the best.

There’s also lots of references to previous heroines and it’s fun to see where they are in life now - with frequent “dreams from home” to see what they are up to.

Magic 5/5

Most of the magic in this book isn’t new. If you’re familiar with the Tortall universe, this is a fantastic enhancement to the original world world building - soaring kudarung, vile storm wings, and the great gods and goddesses. Although Aly has the Sight and that comes into play, most of the magical happenings are connected to the appearance of the god Kyprioth and his many conversation and tips to Aly.
