The world is much like our own, but ruled by family lines that contain the most magic. The Hidden Legacy starts when Nevada Baylor, the sole PI at her family detective agency, gets thrown headfirst into the world of the ruling Houses.
Nevada normally handles cases of cheating spouses or some light insurance fraud, but the House that holds the mortgage on her detective agency calls her in to handle a big time case. She has to bring in a powerful fire mage suspected of killing a copy during an attempted robbery. She doesn’t have the power to combat him, but if she doesn’t try the House will call in full payment on her loan.
The stakes are high and get higher when she crosses path with Mad Rogan, head of his House and also interested in finding the fire mage. He’s sexy, powerful, and seemingly lacking in any normal human empathy.
Families in this story are kind of a big deal. The ruling Houses are family lines bred for success, couples are paired for the likelihood that their offspring would have certain powers. In the midst of all that Nevada’s family steals the show. She lives with her mom, sisters, cousins and grandma. They make a delightful family unit and the scenes between Nevada, her mom and grandma really shine.

I loved how quickly Nevada was thrown in with magic users that seem so out of her league. She finds ways to hold her own no matter what hand she’s dealt. Nevada’s magic also isn’t what it seems and proves to be a key point as we start to understand her relationship with her magic and what has really been holding her back.
Overall: 5/5
I was totally into the magical hierarchical world to which we were introduced in the first book. Nevada and Mad Rogan’s chemistry was spicy. I’m already onto the next book.
