Review:

Myth: 4/5

Catalina is quiet, shy, a Prime siren and now head of House Baylor? We jump right to the end of the Baylor House grace period to kick off this story. Nevada and Connor are otherwise engaged, and we’re brought up to speed on the trials House Baylor and Rogan faced after the events of Nevada’s trilogy.

Catalina is the new Nevada. She’s not as fiercely independent as Nevada, but she has the same sense of family loyalty and protection. She’s also spent quite a lot of time trying not to be noticed, so taking over as head of the House presents her with a lot more personality challenges than it did Nevada. Thankfully she’s been taking “Prime lessons''. I see these kind of like princess lessons from Rogan’s mom. It helps her with the poise and presence she needs when her investigations turn to House politics.

And of course Catalina finds herself up to her neck in House politics and murder. The beautiful Alessandro drops back into her life as more than just a teen heartthrob and the mysterious Linus Duncan seems every bit the scary puppet master of some larger scheme. The Baylor family minus Nevada still delivers. Each character is charismatic in their own way and they create a warm chemistry for every scene in the warehouse. I miss Nevada and Rogan but the plot must go on and Catalina is finding a way to carry it forward.

Magic: 4/5

We get to see new powers of course, but we’re also brought back full circle to the idea of warped humans. These were humans that reacted poorly to the Osiris Sirim (or the original creation of magic). They ultimately don’t wield magic and were part of the reason that distribution of the original sirim was stopped. Enter mad scientist with ulterior motives.

Overall: 4/5

The first full length novel with Catalina at the helm keeps the story moving. Of course we’re still a little disappointed that Nevada and Rogan’s story is over, but Catalina starts to forge a story of her own.
