Review:

Myth: 5/5

This book gets me every time. I cannot tell you how perfect this book is at this point in the series. Celaena plays a dangerous game, but we don’t even know the half of it. She looks to find just a piece of happiness in the world in which she finds herself, but ultimately that’s not her path. We’re dealt these types of heartbreaking lines on the regular:

“Foolish enough to think, just for a moment, that she could get away with being happy. But death was her curse and her gift.”

We know that Celaena is determined. Determined enough that she needs events to force her hand. So just imagine the events needed to change the path on which she finds herself. Events that force the arguably best line in this book “You will never be my friend. You will always be my enemy.”

Magic: 5/5

If Throne of Glass is about discovering magic being used, Crown of Midnight is about understanding what that magic could be in a world in which magic was allegedly destroyed. I love how this book forces multiple characters to confront that question, together or separately, ultimately leading us toward a larger story arc for the series.

Overall: 5/5

This book is perfect in all its heartbreak. It’s absolutely the story that makes it impossible for things to remain as they are. Crown of Midnight forces the characters to confront the next steps in each of their journeys. While your heart will break for each of them, you’ll love every minute of it and the ending will leave you reaching for the next book.
