Review:

Myth: 5/5

With so many bombs dropped at the end of Crown of Midnight, Celaena is at an all time low as she heads to a new continent with a new assignment as the king’s champion. No one does self loathing quite like Celaena and it is brutal to see her face off with the fae prince who seems to dislike her just as much as she does herself.

The character development of Celaena is impeccable. She has to confront her inner demons as well as the new physical horrors that were unleashed into their world. This book also introduces a few new characters, giving new perspective to the witch clans, and even though Celaena is no longer in Rifthold, there is plenty going on between Dorian, Chaol and those who would rally to the Queen of Terrasen should she return.

Magic: 5/5

Yes to everything on magical progression in this book. Celaena showed us her fae form and now, to get the information she needs from her dangerous aunt, she must learn to use her power. Enter Rowan and a brutal battle of wills and self loathing.

Overall: 5/5

“You cannot pick and choose which parts of her to love,” is the tough message from Dorian to Chaol as they debate who and what version of Celaena will return to Rifthold. The inner and physical conflicts that she faces while she’s away will further mark and mold her to the Queen of Shadows we’re waiting to see emerge.
