Review:

Myth: 5/5

Like much of JLA’s recent work, this book had me in a chokehold in the first 30 pages. Lis was an easy narrator to fall in step with, both foolishly brave and fully aware of her poor decision-making. The tension between her and Thorne was remarkable, even from a rather brutal second introduction. I can already tell that this is going to be a big world with lots of depth, of which we just started to scratch the surface.

Magic: 5/5

Part of what’s so fun about first-person narration is that things that are common for them become common for the reader. I thought that was unique in the way that Lis’s magic was explained and portrayed. Clearly, it was unique in the world, but to her, it was just how it was.

Overall: 5/5

I couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed every tension-filled interaction between Lis and Thorne. I also enjoyed the build-up to how Lis and her magic fit into this world. It was a great series opener and I can’t wait for more.
