Review:

Myth: 4.5/5

I have to admit, ever since I read A Shadow in the Ember, I have been obsessed with the prequel story, so while I enjoyed the continuation of Poppy’s story, I was elated every time characters or events from the prequels were referenced.

Though left on a cliffhanger, the first part of this book was a little slow. I still loved Poppy’s strength and growth as she Queen’d it up, but for the beginning of a war, there was a lot less action than anticipated. JLA knew what she was doing though and amped things up per usual as soon as Poppy and Cas could be in the same space.

Magic: 5/5

Poppy was so amazing. I love that she was just a boss, and loved even more the reference to was the Consort becomes. Now, I just have so many questions. I loved, not only Poppy’s characters growth and power, but also her boy’s worship of her. Casteel always, and sometimes Kieran, are just in awe of Poppy’s resilience and strength, and I love that perspective.

Overall: 4.5/5

A slow build to a big finish, “War is only the beginning” is the perfect tagline. The games being played are so much bigger than anyone first imagined, but they’re all here to the end. I also have to say that Reaver was probably my new favorite character.
