Review:

Myth: 5/5

This book really dives into the history of the worlds and realms. I am so excited to see that a whole new series within the Blood and Ash world is spinning out to focus even more on some of this!

I didn’t know how JLA would get through all of the history of realms and kingdoms without it seeming like a vast knowledge dump, but she nailed it. At this point we know Poppy is inquisitive and eager to learn. Everything Poppy explores about herself and the kingdom was inherently a part of her character and I never felt like the backstory was too dry or dumping too much info at once.

This was also a big book for Poppy getting to choose for herself. I love that. Up until this point, she says that the only thing she’s chosen for herself was Casteel. She has several more decisions to make in this book, and the more she makes, the more naturally they start to come to her character. I loved every second of it.

Magic: 5/5

Poppy has been a fantastic powerhouse in all the books so far, but the whole question of “what is she” and what impact that has on her powers has been a huge point of ambiguity. Throughout a lot of this book there is still that learning, though I think we finally figure it out, but let me just say her discovery of her powers is amazing. I also can’t help but love how perfect Cas is in her exploration. He sees her, even when she struggles to see it herself and they lift each other up at every opportunity (GUSHING).

Overall: 5/5

The installment in the Blood and Ash series that we’ve been waiting for! This book dives into Poppy’s past and future. It unpacks the layers of information and lies that she’s been told her entire life leaving us with some idea of what she is and where that leaves her. She and Cas are a solid unit, working towards the best path forward for both of them as well as the Atlantian people.
