Review:

Myth: 4.5/5

This series is off to a strong start. A Trial of Sorcerers, of course, brings us a magic competition, but it also brings plenty of family drama and the start to a fierce coming of age story. Eira was a great character, feeling such strong emotions but trying desperately to bundle them all up in her ice magic to avoid them. The romance foundation is set, it will definitely be slow-burn over the course of the series. While there are multiple potential romantic paths in this first book, it did not read like a love triangle at all, for which I will be forever grateful.

Magic: 5/5

This starts with an elemental magic world, water, fire, earth and wind. While the world building of the training and education of these magic lines was strong, I like that Eira immediately breaks the mold. It’s also clear from the small taste of Meru that we get in this book that there are plenty of other magic systems to explore throughout the series.

Overall: 4.5/5

The first start of Eira’s coming of age story was a delight. Kova says “A TRIAL OF SORCERERS felt like a return to everything I loved about young adult fantasy”and you felt that while reading the book. Though just the first step in Eira’s journey, you can already tell she will be a strong, determined heroine desperately trying to find her way while feeling all too much and trying to make it too little.
