Myth: 4/5

After Elena’s change at the end of book one, she spends a year in a coma. Much of book two is therefore a training montage to get her back to full strength and of course start to figure out what to do with those wings.

So we’re sitting here biting our nails waiting while she readies herself because a.) she’s now a number one target in archangel world as people start to realize that she’s been Made in a different way than they thought and b.) she’s physically recovering after a year in a coma and the sexual tension is high.

There is definitely action in the book as Elena and Raphael try to figure out which angel is angling for the currently open archangel position through displays of terror. But threat also looms in the form of Lijuan’s ‘coming out’ party for Elena.

We also have the ongoing layers to peel back of Elena’s brutal family history. That plays a major part in this book (along with the angel power play and Lijuan’s current mental state). In book one Elena suffered from nightmares about the day her sisters were murdered. More of this story is revealed and a delicate dance of trust starts between Elena and Raphael as she learns to trust and he learns to wait for information freely given.

A bonus in this book, as she trains with the seven, we get more depth to these characters and try to understand their stories and what brought them to stand so loyally with Raphael.

Magic: 4/5

Elena does start to try to understand what impact her change has had on her hunter senses, but most of this story is just learning how to fly (angel 101).

In archangel world there is a little more drama in trying to understand what has happened to Lijuan. Are her powers evolving or devolving? And in this learning process we get peaks of other angelic powers that the secretive archangels have been hiding.

Overall: 4/5

I still definitely enjoyed this book, there was just a lot going on that in such a long series doesn’t seem like it needed to be packed into one book.
