Review:

Myth: 5/5

We are back with Raphael and Elena as they head to a meeting of the Cadre called by a mysterious religious sect. The Luminata has the power to call a meeting of the Cadre if an Archangel has gone too long without being seen. In this case, no one knows if Lijuan is alive or dead or asleep, but they do know that vampires in her territory need to be kept in check. If Lijuan will not present herself to take care of the problem, the Cadre is required to divide up her land and take care of it themselves.

Against this backdrop, the Luminata house themselves in the land of Elena’s mother’s family. Elena knows her people come from Morocco and that she likely has a vampire in her bloodline, but she has little else to go on. This is plenty for a Guild Hunter to start tracking.

Throughout the Cadre meeting and investigation Elena and Raphael remain solid. I love that though we’re later in the series and don’t have any “will they, won’t they” tension, Singh doesn’t introduce petty jealousy as conflict. The conflicts are so much bigger and there is no question that Elena and Raphael will face them together.

Magic: 5/5

The Luminata are pretty creepy, though it's mostly the sense of enclosed spaces and being watched. There is plenty to unpack with the sect itself, especially when the leader can’t take his gaze off of Elena.

Overall: 5/5

After two years of peace and quiet, the Cascade is back in action, forcing the Cadre forward.
