Goodreads synopsis

Review:

Myth: 3.5/5

Kate Daniels is definitely a heroine I want to know more about. She is tough, unique, hiding a lot and we’re meeting her as she’s being thrust into the supernatural spotlight. I enjoy her mercenary attitude and her no nonsense approach to getting the answers she needs.

While this first case took us on a tour of the magical powerhouses of Atlanta, I couldn’t say that I fully got my head around the magical enforcement bodies at play. As this is getting into a long running series, I’m not worried, I’m sure I’ll pick up more as the story goes on.

Though we’re introduced to a few potential love interests in this story, it’s the Beast Lord, head of the shifters that steals the show. Though Kate isn’t all too trusting of love interests, the few potential romantic plot points kind of left me shaking my head.

Magic: 3/5

Similar to the way that I didn’t totally feel like I grasped all of the world building in the government agencies, I also didn’t feel like I got the magic. There are some really cool themes with the blend of magic and technology, but I could use a lot more immersion into the magic of the world to really wrap my head around its operating rules.

Overall: 3.5/5

I’m sold on Kate and I’m ready to learn more about the magical world of Atlanta. Though the size of the series is a little intimidating to walk into, I have loved every other Ilona Andrews series that I’ve read, so I have every faith that this will build into a must read series.
