This is the beginning of a spinoff series for the Kate Daniels World, where the main character is none other than Hugh d’Ambray (aka a big bad from the Kate Daniels series). I loooovvvee that he gets his own story. He was a really fun villain and makes a super interesting lead, especially when paired with the White Lady. It’s recommended that this book is read after Kate Daniels 9 (Magic Binds), and then Hugh and Elara have some roles to play in the end of Kate’s story before finishing their own.
Anyway, Hugh and Elara were some of my favorite things, arranged marriage, monsters finding other monsters to love and accept them, not quite enemies to lovers, but definitely antagonists to something more. It was a journey of a story but really unique.
While a few small overlaps from Kate’s world find their way into this story, it’s really Hugh and Elara’s own. It’s focusing on what Hugh is willing to make of himself after his banishment and how his and Elara’s terrible positions may be able to help each other. Buckle up for a lot of fireworks, action and dare I say it, a redemption arc for the bad guy.

Being in the Kate Daniels World, the same rules apply. There are the shifters, vampires, ancient magics and more. Elara is unique because she has a completely unknown magic about her and Hugh needs to find out what it is, so that if she turn on him, he knows what to do!
Overall: 4/5
Two strong leads in Hugh and Elara, characters with dark pasts and secrets that are just trying to find a place to call their own. I really enjoyed their story and look forward to more.
